The Utah Wild officially finished their last match at Judge Memorial High School last weekend when they hosted the LA Astra. The Astra and Wild both entered this match hungry for their first win of the season.
The Astra scored the first point of the match but both teams started with clean holds. However, LA started to take on a sizable lead by the end of the first, which Astra finished with a 9-4 lead against the Wild.
While the Wild were ultimately dealt a 25-15 loss, this game still had plenty of exciting moments that got fans cheering.
One of these moments came in the second after Ellie Finigan got a hold of the disc after a contested stall. Finigan then passed to Jaycee Jones who acted fast and narrowly dodged an Astra player before grabbing the disc. Shortly after, an impressive huck from Serena Hocmuth to Abbie Davis would earn the Wild's fifth point of the game.
The Astra kept the pressure on the Wild for the whole match. Utah was able to put up five more points across the remainder of the second and the third quarter before tallying five more in the fourth.
The final point started with a Wild offensive line featuring Lily Terpstra, Jaycee Jones, Anna McClurkan, Casstique Williams, and Davis. The final goal was scored by Williams.
Liz Bunderson, Eva Bell, and Davis were team leaders in this match. Bunderson led this match in defense, playing on 17 defensive points, and putting up 2 blocks. Bell recorded 4 assists and 399 throwing yards. Davis ended with the match with 3 goals and 286 receiving yards.
The Wild take on the Colorado Alpenglow next on Saturday, May 9! The match can be
streamed on the WUL's Youtube channel.
